Leading Program Profile: VIDEO Nottingham Trent University (UK)

A top research university in the UK is integrating sustainability across the curriculum, supporting faculty research to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and walking the talk in their operations. I have chosen Nottingham Trent University as the focus of this Leading Program Profile (click here for other profiles like University of Michigan and Presidio)

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is a public research university in Nottingham, England. Its roots go back to 1843 with the establishment of the Nottingham Government School of Design which still exists within the university today.

  • It is the 14th largest university in the UK with 27,920 students split over four different campuses

  • 90% of its research in The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 was judged to be 'world-leading', 'internationally excellent', or 'internationally-recognized'

  • Nottingham Trent University was named University of the Year 2017, the most coveted honor in the prestigious Times Higher Education awards, rightly dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the higher education sector.

This is superbly produced video that highlights faculty, students and administrators discussing the highlights of NTU's programs for business sustainability education and research:

Program Highlights:

  • Integrate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their curriculum

  • Responsible and Sustainable Business Lab with three research themes: innovation, management, and pedagogy

  • Have launched Curriculum Refresh, a university-wide initiative building learning around seven aspects of sustainable development; every student considers at least one aspect

  • Curriculum Refresh Workshops for faculty to learn more from one another and disciplinary experts then upgrade their courses with new cases, problem sets, and concepts

  • Faculty resource library to support effective teaching of sustainability with cases, simulations, games and other didactic tools

  • Sustainability-in-Practice (SIP) certificate is an online module available to all students (can choose food, energy or clothing as a focus); they develop a sustainability solution as a final project

  • Award-winning greenhouse gas management project where students work with companies to reduce emissions
