At the Golden Globe awards last night, Oprah Winfrey became the first black woman to receive the Cecil B. de Mille Award, a prestigious annual award started in 1952 for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Other winners have been Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Woody Allen, Bing Crosby, Doris Day and Bob Hope.
Her 9 minute speech was powerful and poignant stance for racial justice and gender equality. It was an important cultural moment and is not to be missed. I found it to be a call for great call for moral leadership and a recommitment to justice.
